Relaunching your career is like wandering through a maze, no matter what led you here – a move to a new country, a switch in career paths, or a maternity break. The biggest challenge? There's no GPS to guide you. Traditional job searches often feel like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, and resume writers can't always bridge the gap between your past life as, say, a corporate lawyer, and your new dream role as a project manager. That's where the magic of communication comes in.
As a relauncher, you've got a unique story, but it doesn't always fit the script recruiters are used to. Your resume might be a patchwork quilt of experiences that don't align with the specific job descriptions HR teams have in mind. This can be disheartening, to say the least.
Imagine an invisible wall separating you from your dream job. You know you've got the skills and passion, but getting that across on paper or in an interview can feel like solving a Rubik's Cube blindfolded. Recruiters want checkboxes ticked, and relaunchers don't always fit into those neat little boxes.
Now, here's where the real magic happens: communication. It's not just about talking the talk; it's about understanding what makes your dream job tick.
While relaunching as a PhD in Economics, I found myself in a perplexing position when it came to conveying my worth to potential employers. The simple declaration of being 'smart' was insufficient to make a compelling case. Moreover, I was grappling with a personal conundrum: I couldn't quite pinpoint where I wanted my career path to lead—whether it be in development, data analysis, or product management.
The turning point in my journey came when I realized that articulating my value required a deeper understanding of the needs and expectations inherent to a specific role. But how did I manage to achieve this clarity?
I embarked on a quest for knowledge through networking, reaching out to professionals across various domains. I engaged them in conversations about their roles, inquiring about the core competencies essential for success, gaining insights into the daily demands of their jobs, and uncovering the primary challenges they faced.
This approach allowed me to establish a bridge of communication. I began to 'translate' my skills effectively, aligning them with the precise requirements of different roles within my scope of interest.
The most significant revelation was that, unless you are acutely aware of where and how you bring value, others won't recognize it either. Your value, like a hidden treasure, remains concealed until you can articulate it and offer it in a context that resonates with others.
So, for anyone navigating a career transition or contemplating their next professional move, remember that self-discovery is the foundation upon which you can build a compelling narrative of your capabilities. By engaging in open dialogues and seeking to understand the needs of your desired field, you can unlock the door to realizing your true potential and successfully communicating it to the world.
